Make sure to subscribe so you don’t miss any playlists and their silly, amateurish descriptions. Plus you’ll find links to all the songs because I’m kind like that.
Artists I’ve Seen in June
5th - Bag of Crisps at Voodoos
This was the gig where I interviewed Simon Williams on stage about crisps, which I think might have been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
SNAKEMILK - I missed most of it because I waited for what felt like a million years to get some pizza. But the last few songs that I caught were loud and raucous and fun as always. ⍟⍟⍟
Bag of Cans - This lot, man. They just absolutely smash it every time. All excellent with their instruments, all a bit silly and spontaneous, all having a good time. Songs about fire alarms, pelvic floors and washing machines are simultaneously daft and urgent. It’s the joy we all need right now. ⍟⍟⍟⍟⍟
11th - Jo Millet at Norwich Puppet Theatre
Molee Shakes - I hate being negative. Truth is, she is up there doing her thing and that takes bravery. But I find her chords too simplistic, her songs too predictable, her lyrics uninspiring. But she looks the part, not dissimilar to Dolly Parton, so I hope that her songs will increase in boldness and ambition. ⍟⍟
Arthouse Horror - A new band making a big statement. Lucy’s vocals were brilliant - controlled yet powerful. James’s guitaring was fantastic too - who isn’t a fan of guitar solos? I particularly liked the songs that were rougher round the edges, particularly the last one with all the screaming. Will definitely try to make their new EP launch in July. ⍟⍟⍟⍟
Jo Millet - I’m so glad to have caught him live. His voice is effortlessly rich and his songs warm and well thought-out. His backing band made his sound even more luscious, the bass and slide guitar doing their jobs well. All in all, excellent. ⍟⍟⍟⍟
25th Free Gig at Deadwax
Dog at the Opera - Wonderful and brilliant as always. It’s stirring stuff, watching the vocals in particular affect a whole room of people. I also really enjoyed their new songs. Plenty of digging in to riffs and anthemic-type moments without it being corny or simplistic. It’s big and bold and glorious. ⍟⍟⍟⍟
Rats as Big as Dogs - 6 people absolutely smashing it. It was loud and quick, violent and friendly. They all have a great synergy (what a gross word) and it was infectious (also a bit gross). Watching a bloke rapidly wobble his hand through a theremin along to shouty post-punk is instantly brilliant. ⍟⍟⍟⍟
$ebbuku - Not for me. Rap over the top of rock is a style that has to be delivered with confidence so I guess his attitude complimented the music but the whole swaggering in a vest shouting ‘Put your hands up’ I find a bit cringey. But what the hell do I know? There were definitely people who did put their hands up… ⍟⍟
