Hey hey. Welcome back to another dose of recent and decent musical things. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the Community Playlist. I’ll give it a few more days before compiling the comments and re-released the results.
You know the score by now. Let’s crack on with it shall we.
Recent and Decent Playlist
Here’s your seven for the upcoming week. Let me know what you think.
Backstroke - Chartreuse
I've been meaning to share some songs I heard from Wild Fields Fest a fortnight ago. I hoped Chartreuse would be good live having enjoyed what they’ve released and they didn’t disappoint. This one reminds me of Radiohead’s Wolf At The Door.
We Are Making Out - Mura Masa, yeule
A fun, grimey electro song about making out on different Underground lines. All rather filthy.
Romance - Fontaines D.C
So much to choose from their newest album. I've gone with one because it's dark and compelling. It's an album starter that could easily be found also kicking off an IDLES record.
The Horse Is Dead - Sleep’s Cousin, Lieu
Sounds like it’s lifted straight from a 12-inch record - simultaneous antiquated and modern. An exciting rap duo hailing from good-old Norfolk.
I Just Needed You To Know - Girl Scout
A great recommendation from
. Uplifting, intense pop-rock from Sweden with some rousing vocals and awesome instrumentation.
Zero Sum - The Smile
If it wasn’t for Jonny Greenwood on guitar, you’d think this was all computerised. But no. It’s spiky analogue brilliance from these geniuses.
It Could Be Worse - Jeffrey Lewis
A song to end any playlist. Poetic anti-folk from New Yorker who also happens to be playing in Norwich on Friday. A day after I’m seeing another gig. Could be a 2 gigs in 2 days scenario…
Recent and Decent Live Music Video
Every week, I share a live performance. I’m seeing this brilliant lady this coming Thursday at Norwich Arts Centre and am very much looking forward to having a dance. Or a knee-bop at the very least.
Sign off
I saw a cracking gig on Friday and will write a bit more about that, and Wild Fields Festival, in a couple of days when I do my monthly gig round-up. I’ll also hopefully share the Community Playlist results (as mentioned above) although this week I’m back to work, with a whole bunch of new classes, and at least one gig night so… we’ll just have to wait and see about that. Let me know what you think of any songs shared and, as always, let me know if you have heard anything recent and decent!
Soon, I think I’ll have to write a post exclusively giving shout-outs to favourite music Substack writers as there is just so much great stuff out there and I don’t sing your praises enough!
Cheers.
Another great compilation, Matt. You can't go wrong with a rec from our pal Lou. Girl Scout is pretty awesome and they'll be rounding out an extended Two For Tuesday post in a few days!
So glad you featured Girl Scout. They are one of my favourite bands around at the moment. I really like that Jeffrey Lewis track. He’s a new name to me so will be having an investigate. Cheers, Matt.
