So much great music, so little time. As always, here’s my attempt to make a playlist out of 7 of my favourite releases, all under one year old.
Before we get onto that, do check out my community playlist. It requires your input! Don’t be put off by the name. There are some awesome recent songs that include saxophones. I know… I’m as surprised as you are.
Recent and Decent Playlist
Here it is. 7 recent and decent songs for your listening pleasure.
Ugly - Next To Die
Ugly’s album, Twice Around the Sun, was my favourite of 2024. This single is brighter and lighter than last year’s stuff but there are still plenty of harmonies, plenty of instruments and plenty of joy to be had. Who wants to dance with me?
Avalanche Party - John Coltrane’s Moscow Skyscraper
One of the best albums I’ve listened to this month. They describe themselves as feral garage-punk from the wild North Yorkshire Moors. If that doesn’t float your boat, I’m afraid I can’t help you.
Jadu Heart - Mild To Moderate Pain
OK, this was also one of the best albums I listened to this month. It’s hard to pin their genre down. Even this song is pretty different to the rest of their discography. It’s like Radiohead turning up to a rave as it dies down at 4am.
Model/Actriz - Doves
Industrial-techno-rock? Their album comes out in a few days but I’m enjoying last month’s single. Dark, gritty stuff that rattles your bones.
Benefits - The Victory Lap
We’re keeping it dark. This is powerful, essential, political, poetic, poignant, mesmerising.
Tiger Really - Origami Waste
I haven’t enjoyed this sort of indie for years. He’s got this Johnny Burrell snarl, which I like, and the song carefully evolves into an all-encapsulating feel-good summery banger.
Loyle Carner - all i need
Great new hip hop single from Loyle Carner. A song about owning your past and appreciating the present. Here, here.
Recent and Decent Vote
Last week, you voted for FONTAINES D.C. What’s it going to be this time?
Recent and Decent Live Music Video
I’m seeing these guys in a couple of weeks and it’s going to be siiiiiick!!!
Sign off
As it stands, I have no gigs this upcoming week. Just the dentist. That’s not cool but it is important.
Anyone off to see anyone this week? Dental-related or otherwise?
Really liked all the tracks. But my favorite I couldn’t vote for as it was Model/Actriz. It was one that challenged me and didn’t sound similar to several other bands of the past.
Great selection this week, Matt. I love the Ugly track.
I’m off the Germany this weekend for two We Are Scientists gigs as they start their European tour. Very excited, as you can imagine!
